How ProudPoints works

A chore chart for kids that makes progress visible.

ProudPoints turns everyday responsibilities, learning goals and positive habits into clear, achievable goals children can understand — and progress they can actually see.

1

Set what matters in your family

Create the routines, responsibilities and goals that matter to your family. Morning routines. Homework. Reading. Helping around the house. Practising a skill. Healthy habits. Kindness. Initiative. You decide how often a task appears, who it applies to, how many points it is worth and whether you simply mark it as done or give more detailed feedback. Your family. Your priorities. Your rules.

2

Less reminding. More ownership.

Instead of asking: “Have you done it yet?”, children can see what they need to do, what they have already completed and how today's effort contributes to their progress. Tasks become visible. Progress becomes tangible. And parents don't have to be the reminder system all day long.

Reward effort — not only perfect results

Some things are simply done or not done. Others deserve a little more nuance. ProudPoints lets parents recognise not only completion, but also quality, effort and improvement. A difficult homework session. A calmer morning. Trying again after getting something wrong. Doing something without being reminded. Progress doesn't always look like a perfect score. Sometimes the most useful feedback is simply: “I noticed the effort.”

Watch small wins add up

Children can see their progress over days and weeks, while parents get a simple overview of how things are going. Compare days, spot patterns and celebrate improvement.

Rewards worth working towards

Points are only useful when they lead to something meaningful. Create rewards that fit your family — from small privileges to bigger goals. They don't need to cost money.

Children can spend their points now or save them towards something bigger. That adds another useful lesson: choices have trade-offs — and waiting can be worth it.

A research-informed approach to motivation

A reward chart is just the start: motivation is more than rewards.

Giving children points for everything is not the goal. Motivation research suggests something more interesting: external rewards can be useful when they help children experience progress, competence and choice — rather than when they simply feel like control. That thinking influenced how ProudPoints is designed.

COMPETENCE

“I can do this.”

Clear goals and visible progress help children understand what success looks like and notice their own improvement. Instead of a vague “be good” or “try harder”, ProudPoints makes expectations concrete and progress visible.

AUTONOMY

“I have some choice.”

Children are more motivated when they feel some ownership over what they are doing. Letting them choose what reward to save for — or involving them in setting goals and point values — can make the system feel less like control and more like participation.

RELATEDNESS

“Someone noticed.”

Recognition matters. A point becomes more meaningful when it represents a parent's acknowledgement: “I saw what you did.” ProudPoints is designed to support that conversation — not replace it.

So… isn't this just bribing children?

It doesn't have to be. There is an important difference between: “I'll give you something if you do what I say” and “These are the responsibilities and habits we're working on. Let's make your progress visible and celebrate it.” Research on motivation shows why that distinction matters. External rewards can undermine intrinsic motivation when they feel controlling — especially for activities a child already enjoys. But feedback, recognition, visible progress and meaningful choices can support motivation in a very different way. That's why we think of ProudPoints as a scaffold, not the destination.

Points start the conversation.
Progress builds confidence.
Repetition helps build routines.
Routines gradually need less prompting.
The long-term goal isn't to make children chase points. It's to help them need the points less and less.

A healthier way to use rewards

  • Recognise effort and improvement, not only perfect results
  • Offer children meaningful choices about rewards
  • Use rewards particularly for routines that are difficult to establish
  • Combine points with genuine praise and conversation
  • Avoid turning activities children already love into something they do only for a reward
  • Gradually reduce rewards once a routine becomes established

Points are the mechanism. Growing independence is the goal.
